A message from James Smith and Mandy Powers Norrell:
This was a worthy cause.
It was made worthy, it was made noble, by you – by your hard work, by your determination, by your faith in the certainty that our state can and must move forward, and that we can only do that if we leave no one behind.
Thank you so much for all that you have done.
Because this was your campaign, and what you did was nothing short of amazing.
It was never about us. It was never about two individuals being governor and lieutenant governor.
It was always about the people of our state and their future. Your future. Our future, together. One South Carolina.
On Tuesday night, we tried to thank everyone – our spouses, our families, our volunteers, our staff, our donors, and all the voters who placed their trust in us.
This is to make sure that those who missed those speeches know how grateful we are for your incredible efforts.
This campaign from the very beginning was powered by the people of this state. Not just your thousands of hours of effort, but your material contributions as well. This campaign had almost four times the individual donations that the McMaster campaign received. And most of it came from right here, from the 46 counties of South Carolina.
But while we may take a moment’s rest now, this work is not done.
In this campaign, we told the truth to the people, because the people deserve that from those who would be their leaders. We spoke of our love for our beautiful state, but also about the many ways it can be so much better, how we can have a brighter future, together.
We ran against the poisonous partisanship that divides us, that keeps us from working together to overcome our common challenges, but we could not overcome it. This time.
But we can’t give up. It’s too important. Too many are still being left behind.
Hundreds of thousands of us are still without medical coverage. Thousands of our children still attend schools that don’t even meet the pitiful standard of minimally adequate. Ratepayers are still paying billions for the big utilities’ mistakes.
We still see a South Carolina that does not yet exist, but that we know can be. We know you see it, too.
It’s going to take a little longer to get there than we’d hoped.
Just don’t ever let go of that vision. Because this is OUR state. It belongs to all of us – Democrats, Republicans and independents – not just one faction of one party.
The opportunity is still there for the right people, at the right time. And we the people of South Carolina will seize it.
Until then, God bless you all. God bless South Carolina!
